Christmas was invented in 1642

Christmas wasn't invented! It's the holiday to celebrate the birth of baby Jesus.
he traditions that are observe during the Christmas season actually began before the birth of Jesus Christ. The tradition of exchanging gifts, decorating fir trees, and the burning of Yule logs were all winter traditions that although began before Christ was born, were finally incorporated into the festive season we call Christmas, and has became part of the Christmas history.

Over 4000 years ago, the Mesopotamian people would celebrate each New Year with a 12-day festival, they called Zagmuth. The Mesopotamians, believed in many gods, and had this festival in support of their main god, Marduk. They believed that he battled the monsters of chaos at the beginning of each winter. It is from this festival that the 12 days of Christmas is said to have originated.

The ancient Romans held a celebration each year in honour of their god Saturn. The festival, which they called Saturnalia, began in the middle of December and lasted until the first of January our New Years day. The Romans decorated their homes with garlands, as well as trees on which they hung lit candles. During the festival the citizens of Rome would visit each other's homes and hold great feasts and parties. The theory of how the tradition of the giving of Christmas gifts came about was from the Roman practice of exchanging gifts between family and neighbours during the festival of Saturnalia to promote good luck.

However, during the long winter in ancient Scandinavia there would be a a number of days where the sun would not shine. Upon the return of the first sunlight, the Scandinavians would hold a festival they called Yuletide. A Yule log would be burned in a special fire, and people would gather around the fire and hold great feasts. To remind themselves that the spring and summer would surely return again, people in some areas of Scandinavia would tie apples to tree branches. Our tradition of the Christmas tree is believed to have evolved from this ancient ritual, as well as the one from the Roman ritual of decorating trees with candles during the festival of Saturnalia. Some people believe that the tradition of singing carols began when people in Scandinavia would sing celebration songs on the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, which happened around December 22nd.

Another theory about the evolution of the pagan winter celebrations to the celebration of the birth of Jesus is that the Roman emperor Constantine, who converted to Christianity, wanted to incorporate the pagan winter rituals together with the celebration of Jesus Christ's' birth. In this way, Constantine hoped to bring 2 religions together help both pagans and Christians celebrate together. It is widely believed today that Jesus was not actually born on, or even close to, December 25th. But that the Roman church made great efforts in making the December celebration only about the birth of Christ, and replacing any celebrations that were in honour of pagan gods.

Christmas is invented by the Roman emperors. The Roman people used to have a holiday for the Persian light god on 25th december. But because the christian Roman empires didn't want any heathen holidays in their empire, they put the birth of the christian child Jesus on the date. Entirely removing the holiday would probably have caused riots. Also, the christians believe christ was actually born in the year 6 BC in april/march.

When the Catholic Church took over in Europe they took the pagan holiday of the Winter Solstice and made it Christmas. At first it was called Christ Mass and it was a day of church services. This would have been in or about 900AD. The rest of the traditions that we have today developed over time. The Christmas tree comes from Germany, our red and white Santa comes from a Coke Cola ad in the 1920's, cards come from the 1800's, and lights were first used in 1880 by Edison.

Christmas was first celebrated in the 25 of December and did not become widespread until the 4th cent. In the mid 19th cent, Christmas began to acquire its associations with an increasingly secularized holiday of gift-giving and good cheer, a view that was popularized in works such as Clement Clarke Moore's poem.

In the 3rd or 4th Century as Christianity was becoming the prevalent reliogion in the former Roman Empire, a "Christ mass" was instituted to take the place of the pagan festival of Saturnalia. Saturnalia happened around the Winter Solstice, and involved partying, feasting, and gift-giving. Christian leaders wanted to replace it with an observance having to do with Jesus. The crucifiction was known to have happened in the spring of the year, and they picked the birth as an event to celebrate in the place of Saturnalia. Obviously some aspects of Saturnalia have carried over into Christmas.

Christmas was invented when Jesus was born in a stable in Bethlehem.

Xmas is a common abbreviation of the word Christmas.

The "-mas" part is from the Latin-derived Old English word for Mass,

while the "X" comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek word Χριστός, translated as "Christ".

There is a common misconception that the word Xmas stems from a secular attempt to remove the religious tradition from Christmas by taking the "Christ" out of "Christmas".
