The history of synthesizers started in the late 1800's. This is when inventors started practicing with various electronic keyboards. It wasn't until the 1930's and 1940's that the first comparable synthesizer to today's synthesizer was invented.

while not called synthesizers, composite or multi-sound instruments date to Classical Music times such things as Orchestrions, the electrical Telharmonium of the early l900"s was a more modern development, hardly portable, it weighed upwards of 200 tons, as much as a heavy-duty electric locomotive. The device also caused interference on Manhattan underground phone lines. there were various composite instruments, more practical ( Clavilux and similar names) in the thirties, some were tied into light effects- a light organ, this was a popular shop project among the more advanced vocational students int he late sixties combining electronics with wood-shop technique. again there were various makes by different music, usually organ., mfrs, also electronic music, but more singular, is the Theremin.
