The history of synthesizers started in the late 1800's. This is when inventors started practicing with various electronic keyboards. It wasn't until the 1930's and 1940's that the first comparable synthesizer to today's synthesizer was invented.

while not called synthesizers, composite or multi-sound instruments date to Classical Music times such things as Orchestrions, the electrical Telharmonium of the early l900"s was a more modern development, hardly portable, it weighed upwards of 200 tons, as much as a heavy-duty electric locomotive.
