in the mid 70's "Frascona Buick" a Milwaukee, WI car dealer had bought a alleged staff car of Hitler. He was going to show it on a car circuit of some sort and had a custom show trailer built. But the trailer was too small for people to enter to walk around the car to view it. The huge Mercedes Benz convertible had two inch thick bulletproof windows and looked authentic. My father was a mechanic at the dealership and fixed a broken door or latch hinge on it. While he worked one Saturday he let me sit on the cars parade seat which was toward the center of the car.

The car had gotten some publicity, I think that the Milwaukee Journal had done a small story on it. The result of the publicity however generated some negative feedback, as some saw it glorifying Hitler and the local Nazi/white supremacist groups.

As a result of this and the trailer debacle the dealer sold the car. That was the last I ever saw or heard of it again. There had already been questions about the cars authenticity, how it got here, whether it had actually been an actual Hitler car. Frascona opened a small classic type dealership, but closed it after only a short while. The car however, with its heavy plating and windows appeared to be an odd car for any other type of service. Its patina and appearance seemed authentic.

This car turned out to be a car Hitler had gifted to the leader of Finland, as a gift to an ally. Its provenance is that Hitler may have rode in it, after he presented it. The actual car he  had as one of his personal cars resides in a mueseum in  Canada.

In 1941 Hitler ordered and used at least two custom Mercedes 770-Ks for his personal use. The cars were 20 ft long, fitted with 1/2" armour plate and 1 1/4" bullet-proof glass and a massive 51-gallon fuel tank.

The 770-K had a supercharged 230 hp, single-overhead-cam, straight-8 engine with dual carburetors and dual ignition, with 2 plugs for each cylinder. However due to to the extra weight of armour (around 10,000 lbs), only had a top speed of around 100 mph and a fuel consumption of approximately 3miles per gallon.

The vehicle was equipped with independent front and back power brakes (that even today surpass U.S. safety requirements), 4-wheel independent suspension with coil springs and hydraulic shocks.

Leader of the Hitler Youth, Arthur Axmann, used Hitler's Mercedes to flee the Fuhrerbunker after Hitler committed suicide, according to the book Aftermath: Martin Bormann and the Fourth Reich. The whereabouts of Hitler's vehicle was probably of little importance to the allies. Axmann, to my knowledge, was never questioned about the car.

So, for all intents and purposes, Hitler's Mercedes couldstill be floating Western Europe somewhere. That's a big 'if', though.
