The National Library of Australia has a search of local newspapers where you can see the original reports. Here is a short extract from the Sydney Morning Herald of Monday 20 March 1950:
Aurora Australis Seen Last Night
A brilliant display of the Aurora Australis - southern lights - was visible in many parts of Australia last night.
Reports were received by the Sydney Weather Bureau from Hobart, Goondiwindi, in south- west Queensland, Ceduna, in South Australia, and from many Sydney suburbs.
Observers in Hobart described the lights as a vivid display in the southern half of the sky. and said the sky became a brilliant green with red streamers reaching upwards.
Many Sydney suburban residents also saw the aurora from about 8.30 until 10.30.
In most cases it was described as "a brilliant red glow."
The last appearance of the aurora australis was in May of last year.
An aurora is caused by particles of the sun entering the earth's atmosphere and
making the molecules of the air luminous.
Aurorae are generally associated with sunspots, which interrupt radio communications.
It is exceptionally rare for the southern lights to be seen beyond 30 degrees from the equator. Goondiwindi is 28.5 degrees from the equator.
