It is the same reason why Muslims, and Hindus and Buddhists and Pagans and Christians and every other persecuted religious group came to America for. Why would you want to live in a place where you were being beaten or shunned or targeted for practicing a certain religion, when there was a new land that promised equality and freedom to all. In the end its all about the struggle for freedom happiness, and wealth.
One of the most important religious freedoms is equally the right to belong to the religion of one's choice or to belong to no religion at all. Not all American atheists came to America as atheists. Many are from Christian backgrounds, but at some stage came to the conclusion that there is no God and are therefore now atheists.
