i have an 03 so im assuming that its the same... but remove your driver front tire and look above your cv boot on the transmission it should have a blue color connector.
The neutral/back up light switch is located on the passenger side of the transmission close to the rear corner of the housing. It is triangular in shape. Take it apart carefully and clean the contacts with contact cleaner.

If you are referring to the brake light then the brake light switch is stuck.
The temperature sending unit on a 96 cavalier is on the front of the engine. It is just to the left of the alternator.
