There are some deposits of garnet stones on the east coast -- I believe it is one or both of the Carolinas.
The best garnets - star garnets - are found in India and North Idaho near the town of Emida (about 70 minutes south of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho). You can dig them yourself outside the commercial digging spots, or some of the commercial spots (there are only 2or 3 at the most) will rent you a shovel and sieve for a day for a low fee. The garnets are found in the banks of Emerald Creek, but smaller, sand-size garnets are found in several drainages in that mountainous area.
After the start garnets are polishes, you can clear see a weird structure in them that is in the shape of a six-legged star. Some of them are gorgeous. I have seen some of these garnets that are the size of a small walnut. They sell for quite a bit of money.
Also, these garnets are part of the reason that Idaho is called the Gem State. There are also deposits of high quality opal, and beryl is mined commercially over the mountain ridge south of the garnet location.
"Garnet" is actually the name of a group of silicate minerals, which can be found around the world, as spectacular crystals, gem rough, or massive deposits mined for industrial abrasives. Garnets are found in literally every color, and entire books have been written on them.
The garnet group includes almandine, andradite, calderite, goldmanite, grossular, hibschite, katoite, kimzeyite, knorringite, majorite, morimotoite, pyrope, schorlomite, spessartine, and uvarovite.

Vermelho Garnet is found in Mozambique, an exotic land far away on the eastern coast of Africa. A myriad of incredible gemstones and minerals. Among its treasures is the beautiful Vermelho Garnet, which features a rich combination of both the Pyrope Garnet as well as the Almandine Garnet species. The Pyrope garnet portion gives the stone its regal red color, while the Almandine garnet brings the warm spicy shades of cinnamon. This spicy gemstone originates from a region known as Zambezia and is called Vermelho Garnet, meaning "red" in Portuguese, one of the official languages of this exotic country.
Garnet is very often mined in Africa and Sri Lanka. Some of the most beautiful come from the Umba Valley in Tanzania.
Garnet is a mineral, of the Al SiO3 community, with other contributions as well. Some times used as a minor gemstone. A cubic mineral, found often enough in metamorphosed rocks such as schist.
Garnet schist-- as well as mica schist--can be found anywhere where clay rock with some calcite content-- such as siltstone or a mudstone, for example-- can be compressed (via metamorphism) and consequently sqeezed into rock-like layers.

Garnet jewelry can be found in South Africa for cheap because of the cheap miners found there. It is very expensive in the states so I hope you take my advice and enjoy it.

Star garnets are so rare that thus far they have only been found in two places in the world: in the state of Idaho in the USA, and in India. The garnet varieties that occasionally exhibit asterism are almandine and a mixture of almandine and pyrope garnet.
