You can also check timing with a code reader with live data reading.
If the engine is fuctioning properly try disconnecting the ground battery terminal for 1 minute. If the engine is fuctioning properly and this does not cure your needs. It will have to be reset by a mechanic with a diagnostic machine for Toyota.

In the fuse box under the dash driver side there is an empty fuse socket that is used to insert a spare fuse to have the diagnostic codes displayed by the check engine light. Perhaps some one has left a fuse in the diagnostic socket of the fuse box.
