The engine air filter is a bit of a joy as access is tight. The filter is in a housing by the left front wheel. There is a "scoop" intake manifold leading from the very front of the engine bay to the filter box.
You need to undo the spring clips, pull back on the "upper" (back half) housing and extract the old filter. Make certain you put the new filter in right way 'round (refer to markings on filter or on how the old one was in there).

yes it does. It is a little hard to take out. If you have had this car for sometime and the cabin filter has not been changed it is probably very clogged up. If you are reasonably handy I would recommend going to your local Subaru parts dealer and buying a new filter. It comes with instructions on how to replace it
