The thermostat for a 1984 Lincoln Town Car is under the top hose inlet. The inlet is bolted to the top of the engine and is easy to remove.

After spending several thousands dollars at the dealer mechanics and several independent repair shops I did my own repair by cannibalizing the thermostat. Since I did that repair the car never overheated again.This type of repair can cause hot and cold spots in the engine. We have put on ten thousand miles since my own repair.
