The Mormons are a Christian denomination founded in the late 1800 by Joseph Smith Jr. They are also known by the acronym LDS: Latter Day Saints. They made their big migration west because they were looking for a place where they could settle and be free from persecution which came about because of their temporary belief in the practice of Polygamy which was illegal in the US. they went west because they could then establish a territory and state of their own which would allow polygamy (which is marriage of many wives to one man). this practice is no longer practiced or believed in by most Mormons.

"Mormons" are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Over 150 years ago, they traveled the United States looking for a place where they could practice their religion in peace. The traveled from New York to Ohio to Missouri to Illinois and finally to Utah. Now, Church headquarters remains in Utah, but almost 14 million Mormons are scattered around the world.
