Let's say everything "goes according to plan" and Joe Biden is sworn in and things remain the same. If Vice President Biden "drops out of the picture" after that and all things remain the same, Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, will step up. Links can be found below.
To answer the question that was asked, President Obama would nominate a replacement, and both houses of congress would vote on it. If both houses of congress approve, that nominee would be immediately sworn in as vice president. Otherwise, the president would submit another nomination for approval. This would continue until both houses of congress approve one of the president's nominations or until the next Inauguration Day, whichever comes first.
