Best Answer

It was built by the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in 1542

Answer 2

He built the walls as we see them today, but there were other walls beforehand. There was the wall King David built around the city of David and there is the Roman wall around the city, and there are also walls from the time of the Maccabees.

The wall around the Temple Mount itself was built by Herod

Over the course of history the different walls were built (partially) in new places showing the expansion of the city over time.

Answer 3

First Temple - Kings David and Solomon.

Actually, Jerusalem predates that the founding of the first temple significantly, and most secular sources claim the founding of the temple was at approximately 960 BCE. The first historical mention of Jerusalem is in a correspondence letter letter to pharaoh Amenhotep around 1330 BCE from his client king Abdi-Heba who was ruler of Jerusalem at the time. The ethnicity of Abdi-Heba is unknown though his name derives from Hurrian culture (though it is unlikely he was Hurrian) meaning that exactly who founded Jerusalem remains unknown. Though many Jewish traditions say the city was founded by Shem and Eber (descendants of Noah) and that the city of Salem mentioned in bible may be a present day Jerusalem however none of this has been given any historical credence.

How did Jerusalem form?

It was built as a hill-top settlement by the Pre-Canaanites and was a city-state under the Jebusites. It was eventually conquered by the Israelites and named Jerusalem. It grew slowly for many centuries until it began to overflow the city walls in the mid-1800s and continue to grow much larger.

When was the wall of Jerusalem's Old City built?

The walls of the Old City of Jerusalem were last built by King Herod of the Roman Empire (also known as Herod the Great) Herod was responsible for the building and fortifying the old city, at that point in history, the only city of Jerusalem, the smaller city within Jerusalem known as the City of David and the famous mountaintop vacation palace turned Jewish stronghold called Massada. This buildup took place between 73 and 4 BCE during the time of the second great temple of the Jews. It has been discussed at great length, how old Jerusalem is and who was the first to fortify it. Most historians agree that Jerusalem was founded approximately 3000 to 3100 years ago (1300 BCE) by Cannanites and Amorites and named for one of their gods Salem or Shalem. Abraham, it is said, visited this city during this time. Jerusalem was said to have been first fortified 1000 years later by another group of Cannanites, the Jebusites. Calling the Walled part of the city the City of Zion. The walls that are seen today were the walls built by Herod toward the end of the last millineum BCE.
