It depends on which year. When this question was first asked, Barack Obama was running against his Republican opponent John McCain, whom he defeated in 2008. Prior to getting the Democratic nomination, Mr. Obama had to first run against Hillary Clinton. Then, in 2012, Mr. Obama defeated his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney. There were other third-party candidates running, but it was mainly an Obama vs. Romney battle.
In the 2008 election, Mr. Obama's principal opponent was John McCain, Republican Senator from Arizona. Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was McCain's vice-presidential candidate; while both had policy differences with Obama, it was Palin who made the majority of the harshest remarks that attacked him; she even accused him of "pal-ling around with terrorists," a statement debunked by fact-checkers.
It should also be noted that before Obama got the Democratic nomination, his chief rival was Hillary Clinton; she wanted the nomination, and of course was opposed to Mr Obama. There is no evidence she was "against" him personally, but it was a heated campaign and both fought hard to win the nomination.
In the 2012 election, Mr. Obama's chief rival was Republican Mitt Romney. On November 6, 2012, President Obama defeated Mr. Romney in both the popular vote and the electoral college, winning re-election.
The country has been divided between conservative and liberal political views for some time, so it is understandable that President Obama would have his share of critics, as does every sitting President, but it is not every one.
According to the polls, the majority are currently WITH President Obama in early 2012. There is a very small, but loud, group of "far right" pundits and politicians that continue to malign the President for political reasons, and they have spread untrue and hyperbolic statements and "sound bites" to try to get others to be afraid of and against the President, too. Many of them are doing this out of fear, as it is known that hatred is born of fear. The loudest are often the most scared, and it is usually fear of the unknown rather, than of the known, that results in disinformation and exaggeration that is believed by people who are afraid and it cycles 'round and 'round. Others do this for political party or for personal gain. The majority of Americans see through the political attacks, and as the untruths are uncovered by those who have been determined to find out the truth for themselves, They are becoming more against the few political extremists, (both left and right) instead of against our own majority-elected President.
See the related questions below for opinions on both sides of the coin.
