Edwin Hubble has been given most of the credit for figuring out that the Doppler redshift from faraway galaxies means that they are receding from us at an incredible rate; and the further away they are, the faster they're receding.

The first to propose what became known as the Big Bang theory (no relation to the TV show of the same name) was Belgian astronomer Georges Lemaître, in 1927. It was given its name by English astronomer Fred Hoyle in 1949, during a radio broadcast meant to downplay and discredit the theory.

A significant discovery can be credited to Edwin Hubble. He made the observation that the distances between galaxies was expanding, a fact that could be explained equally well EITHER by Steady State Hypothesis or by a Big Bang. Indeed, for more than three decades after Hubble's work, most cosmologist did not accept the Big Bang.

It was Belgian Catholic priest George LeMaitre who first suggested the hypothesis of an expanded universe from an extremely dense and hot state, and that it had a beginning. Few believed him at first, and his idea was ironically called "The Big Bang" because it was not taken seriously. Source Wiki.
Georges Lemaître, a Belgian physicist and Roman Catholic priest, who, in 1927, independently used Friedmann's equations to propose that the inferred recession of the spiral nebulae (per Edwin Hubble's discovery of 1924) was due to the expansion of the Universe, is considered the father of the Big Bang Theory. As such, the Jesuit priest Georges LeMaitre was credited with being the first to mathematically detail (or discover) the cosmological study now known as the Big Bang.

However the consensus for modeling cosmology was agreed upon based on the work of four scientists: Alexander Friedmann, Georges Lemaître, Howard Percy Robertson, and Arthur Geoffrey Walker. Occasionally referred to as the FLRW, FRW, FL, or RW (e.g., a complete or partial combination of their last initials) Universe, it presents a metric used to explain Einstein's field equation of general relativity and thus became the foundation for the currently understood version of the standard 'Big Bang Theory'.

Note: While the Friedmann Theory preceded the Big Bang Theory, the developed equations were fundamental to establishing a foundation for the Big Bang Theory. Alexander Alexandrovich Friedmann is best known for his pioneering theory that the universe was expanding, governed by a set of equations he developed from Albert Einstein's equations of general relativity, showing that the Universe might be expanding in contrast to the static Universe model advocated by Einstein at that time. From these equations he postulated three Friedmann models describing positive, zero and negative curvature respectively. This dynamic cosmological model of general relativity would come to form the standard for both the Big Bang and Steady State theories.

The name "Big Bang" was coined by Sir Fred Hoyle, who was a life-long proponent of the alternative "steady-state" theory of the universe. He used the phrase "big bang" in a sarcastic way.

Georges Lemaître, a Roman Catholic priest as well as a professor of astronomy, proposed the Big Bang theory in 1927. The theory was translated and printed in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1931. However, the theory was not widely accepted until George Gamow revised it in 1946.

The Big Bang theoretical model in its modern form (i.e. a model of an expanding universe based on Einstein's general theory of relativity) was first formulated by Alexander Friedmann in 1922. Georges Lemaître independently arrived at the same expanding universe model in 1927.

That this applied to our actual universe was discovered experimentally by Edwin Hubble shortly afterwards, in 1929, when he discovered that the distant galaxies were receding from our position with velocities proportional to their distance.

Jesuit priest Georges LeMaitre, in 1927, first proposed the concept of an expanding universe, even deriving what would become known as Hubble's Law at the time.

Two years later Edwin Hubble showed that LeMaitre's derivations were observable facts. This did not PROVE that the density of our Universe was once far larger than it is today, but made the eternally static universe of Einstein impossible to support.

Georges LeMaitre, though he's not the one who gave it the name "Big Bang". That would be Fred Hoyle, who was actually an advocate of a different model, called the "Steady State" theory.

Did the Catholic Church discover the Big Bang?

The Catholic Church, per se, did not 'discover' the Big Bang Theory. However, the original theory was first proposed by a Catholic monsignor from Belgium, Father George Lemaitre, in 1933, after reading Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

How did people discover the big bang theory?

It is a theory, therefore it was not discovered. It was thought up by scientists and philosophers.

Why was the Big Bang neither big nor did it bang?

According to the believes of physics and the big bang, we know that the big bang was both big and a bang. Since we are still receiving radiation from the big bang, So considering that factor I would say that it was big and a bang. What do you believe?

How did Albert Einstein discover the Big Bang?

The Big Bang was first posited by Belgian physicist and priest, Msgr. Georges Lemaitre, who developed the idea at some stage between 1927 and 1933, 1927 when he first proposed the expanding universe model, and 1933 when he published his most detailed paper on the model and it's implications for universe formation. Most of his work was based of Einstein's work on relativity. And over the years, scientists have found increasing evidence which supports the big bang theory, as Ken Mitchell above states.
