Simon Jose Antonio de la Santisima Trinidad Bolivar y Palacios Ponte Blanco [July 24, 1783-December 17, 1830] may be considered the founder of modern Venezuela. He was the leader of liberation struggles against Spanish colonialism of Venezuela, Peru, Panama, Ecuador, Colombia, and Bolivia. But he would have insisted upon sharing that honor with Cristobal Hurtado de Mendoza [June 23, 1772-February 8, 1829]. He and Mendoza in fact were Venezuela's first two presidents. Bolivar specified, '... you are the organizer and I am the conqueror'.
