The Catholic Church was early on split into two segments. One segment was based in Rome, Italy, and was called the Roman Catholic Church.

The other segment was based in Byzantium, Greece, which had replaced Rome as the Romans' capital. It was called the Byzantine Catholic Church, but is better known now as Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, and so forth.

Byzantium is now called Istanbul (ISS-tan-bool)
