The French commissioned the first Ironclad in 1860; the La Glori.
Actually, the Confederate States of America made the First Ironclad Battleship in the year of 1863 for the historical Battle of the ironclads. It was a captured Union ship called the Merrimack that was plated with iron so that it could protect itself against the enemy fire. This infuriated the Union causing them to build an ironclad as well naming it the Monitor, the first battleship with a Revolving gun turret. This was in 1863 not until 1867 did the French commission the La Glori.
The first modern battleship was the HMS Dreadnought, launched by the Royal Navy in 1906. Sir John Fisher, first lord of the admiralty, is generally given the lions share of credit for the vessel.
Warships built as such have been around since the time of the great Greek civilisations. No single person is credited with 'inventing' them. They evolved through many years.

The first Union ironclad warship for the Union in the US Civil War was the USS Monitor. It was designed by Swedish engineer, John Ericsson. The ship was unique in that it was the first warship to have a revolving turret. This enabled the ship to always be able to aim its cannons on an enemy warship. The USS Monitor was built in 1862 and battled the CSS Virginia at the Battle of Hampton Roads.
