Homer ['Ομηρος] is the ancient Greek poet who wrote the epic poems of Iliad and Odyssey. Iliad presents the ten years war between the Greeks under the leadership o…f the Achaeans against Troy. Odyssey presents the adventures of the ten years return journey of one of the major leaders of the victorious Greeks - Odysseus king of Ithaca.
We know very little about him - he was reputed to have lived in about 725 CE, came from Chios, and wrote down one of the hundreds of versions of The Iliad and The Odyssey.… Whether he had a family is unknown as is so much about him.

In ancient Greece, just as in the bible, people did not go by last names; only first names were used; the way a person was differentiated was: by adding where the person was f…rom, or by their fathers name, for instance: Hector from Troy, Isaac son of Abraham. However the Greek poet "Homer" did have a different name at birth; since he was brought into existence near the river Meles his mother Critheis named him Melesigenes; later in life after his many toils and becoming blind (due to natural cause), he adopted the name "Homer" which meant blind person.
Nobody knows for sure- the ancient Greek historian Herodotus said that Homer lived about 400 years before his own time, which would be around 850 B.C. But the mathematician Er…atosthenes believed that he lived much earlier than this, at the time of the Trojan War, which ran from 1194-1184 B.C. Eratosthenes's estimate is believed to be the more accurate one, but the exact dates of the birth and death of Homer remain unknown- and may always do so.
Nobody knows for sure, but he lived around c. 800 B.C.

We don't know for certain even if he really existed. There were hundreds of bards who roamed around singing the stories of the heroic age. After cursive writing was invent…ed, some of the versions of their stories were written down. A version which has survived was ascribed to 'Homer the blind poet of Chios'. But we know really nothing about him.
