Justin Trudeau (Member of Parliament for Papineau) is currently the twenty-third Prime Minister of Canada. He is the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, and became prime minister after his party won a majority of the seats in the House of Commons in the 2015 Canadian federal election. He is currently also the Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Youth.
The Prime Minister is appointed by the Governor General of Canada as the person most likely to hold the confidence of the House of Commons, and is not directly elected. A Prime Minister who loses the confidence of the House of Commons is expected to resign. By convention, the Prime Minister is also expected to be an elected Member of Parliament, though this is not a condition for holding office. A Prime Minister who doesn't have a seat in the House of Commons will typically try to win a seat in a by-election by having a member of their party resign their seat.
