President Dwight D. Eisenhower, responding to the Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957, formed the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics to investigate what a new federal agency overseeing the U.S. effort to explore outer space would entail. The result was the formation of NASA in 1958.
NASA was created by the National Aeronatics and Space Adminstration Act which was passed by Congress on July 16 1958.
NASA became operational on October 1 of that year.
