Various city-states vied for power. ~1800 BCE - Old Babylonian empire starts under Hammurabi. ~1400 BCE - Middle Babylonian/Assyrian empires ~1000-612 BCE - Neo-Assyrian Empire (Sennacherib, Esarhaddon, Ashurbanipal, etc.) 612-520 BCE - Neo-Babylonian Empire (Nebuchanezzar II, Nabonidis, etc.) 520-331 BCE - Persian Empire (Cyrus the Great, Darius, etc) 331- Macedonian conquest under Alexander the great That's it for Ancient Mesopotamia. After that it stops being its own entity under really modern times, and now it's known as Iran.
