There is no designated route around China to Europe. Ships either sailed across the Mediterranean to the Middle East, where they then went on foot towards China, or ships sailed all the way around Africa to get to China. However, new routes formed as history went on, such as sailing across the Atlantic, around South America, and then across the Pacific. Canals were eventually created to make distances shorter, too, such as the Panama Canal and the Suez Canal. The two most important routes were most likely the route around Africa and the formation of the Suez Canal. The route around Africa was founded by the Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama. The French built the modern Suez Canal.
