During world war one, Austria and Hungary were one and was known as Austria-Hungary. Austria-Hungary was allied with Germany and Italy and they made up the Triple Alliance, made in 1882.
However, as soon as the war started, Italy left the alliance; they said that since Austria-Hungary was technically declaring war on Serbia (because Serbians had murdered the heir to the Austrian throne), it was not a defensive war and Italy did not have to fight (Italy also had always disliked Austria-Hungary anyway, so that didn't help).
The Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria wound up joining the Germany and Austria-Hungary instead. Italy would go on to join the Allies in 1915 and fight against Austria-Hungary.
