Ngo Dinh Diem was born on January 3, 1901 to a noble Vietnamese Catholic family. A strong anti-Communist, he joined the United States backed government, and made himself president in 1955. While in power, he imprisoned and murdered hundreds of Buddhists, this caused the U.S. oppose him. Diem was assassinated in 1963 and this left Vietnam vulnerable to the Communist threat from the north which resulted in civil war. His uncompromising rule and overthrow, paved the way for the Vietnam War.
