Roland H Johnson III was given the title "the Asphalt Philosopher" in 1970 when he hitch-hiked and walked on an eight month travel around the United States and Canada. He became recognized on the highways of northern Michigan and was dubbed the Asphalt Philosopher because of his extensive story sharing about his adventures. He was a fixture at "hippie gatherings" and was one of the original "Rainbow Family at gatherings like the first Rainbow reunion at Strawberry Lake in Colorado in the early 1970's. He came from Austin, Texas and was part of the Hippie movement in the mid 1960's onward. He eventually was one of the original bouncers at the Armadillo World Headquarters, a concert hall famous for its own blend of cowboys, rednecks, bikers and hippies peacefully enjoying the free lifestyle of the era. He eventually became a college teacher in sociology and an ordained Baptist minister.
