Well, that depends what side you are on. The war was between the capitalist U.S.-backed South Vietnam and the communistist U.S.S.R.-backed North Vietnam. The war was won by the North Vietnamese.

Enemy-North Viet Air Force, North Viet Navy (the ones that triggered the Tonkin Gulf Incident), NVA & VC.

All but the VC were regular military units. The Viet Cong were actually South Vietnamese citizens (or residents) living in country. They wore what uniforms/clothing they had access to, and fought with what weapons they could get their hands on.

1. NVAF flew MiG17, MiG19, MiG21 jets. Red China supplied MiG17 & MiG19s, their J5 & J6 versions. USSR supplied MiG17s in the beginning, then later only MiG21s. NVAF pilots and mechanics were trained IN the USSR & Communist China...lasting about 2 years.

2. NVN used torpedo boats imported from USSR & Red China, P4 & P6 class boats. The P4 may have been of aluminum construction, the P6 of wood construction. Approximately 20 or less torpedo boats were in the NVN inventory.

3. NVA infantrymen wore green fatiques and a green pith helmet and was armed with a spiked bayoneted AK47. Officers wore a K54 pistol. Nearly all of these were weapons were CHICOM (Chinese Communist manufacture) by 1969.

4. North Viet Army (NVA) consisted of Soviet supplied T54/T55 medium tanks (100mm main guns) and PT76 amphibious light tanks. Chicom supplied versions were the T59 and T63 respectively.

NVA & VC.

Note: The USAF & USN (air units) were fighting against the North Viet Air Force and the North Viet Ground Defense Systems (Surface to Air Missiles & AAA fire).

Note #2: The initial opening of hostilities between Hanoi & Washington was between the North Viet Navy vs the US Navy in the Tonkin Gulf in 1964.
