Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt left in the same vessel, but Cernan was the last one inside, so probably him (in the same way that Neil Armstrong was the "first" man on the moon despite landing at the same time Buzz Aldrin did; Armstrong was the first to set foot on the surface).

This was 40 years ago, by the way, which is a crying shame.

Eugene Cernan, Commander on Apollo 17, followed lunar module pilot Harrison Schmitt

into the LM for the return to Earth on December 13, 1972 .

Cernan was the most recent man on the moon, but most likely not the last. We

don't know who will be next, and we know even less about who will be the last.
