The Gunpowder Plot, a conspiracy by Roman Catholic gentry in England, was led by RobertCatesby. He was a Catholic of wealth and lineage who had suffered much as a recusant both by fines and imprisonment. The plan was to blow up London's Houses of Parliament. The plot failed when Guy Fawkes, who placed the explosives was arrested on November 5th 1605 and Robert Catesby was later shot dead when resisting arrest.

Since then November 5th has been celebrated as Bonfire Night by fireworks displays and bonfires burning Guys (supposed effigies of Guy Fawkes) all over the United Kingdom. In recent years it has become fashionable to celebrate bonfire night at the weekend either before or after November 5th because children then have a day off from school and adults are not working, so can enjoy it together.
