From the time of Caesar Augustus (during the lifetime of Jesus), the religion of the Roman Empire consisted of emperor worship and the worship of a pantheon of Gods headed by Jupiter and Hera (the homologues of the earlier Greek version, Zeus and Hera). After 325 A.D., when Constantine was the Roman emperor, the state religion was Christianity. And Christianity has predominated in Europe ever since (along with being the majority religion in North and South America, as well as Australia.

The religion of Rome (prior to Christianity) was adopted from the Greeks, and it is what we would today refer to as Greek (or Greco-Roman) mythology. At the time it did not have any particular name, it was just considered to be a description of how the world was.

The religion is linked to the state because the Romans have believed in God for a long time. The Romans used to worship at meal times, they were very respectful to there God, they would throw food and wine at meal times. The Romans used to always worship, and they even made models out of materials as a God, they would sit on a hard mat and pray.

The ancient Romans had no state religion as such. They worshiped Jupiter as the head of the pantheon of gods with the other gods and goddesses in their proper order. Even the city of Rome itself was personified into the goddess Roma. Foreign cults, such as those of Isis and Cebele were welcomed and each family had its own family gods. A state religion did not come into existence until 380 AD when Theodosius I made Christianity the state religion.

There wasn't a Roman state religion in ancient Rome. The society accepted most religious rights and allowed people to worship as they wished. After Constantine the Catholic Church became the state church.
