The first stone castle built in Britain was the Tower of London in 1078 thou castles existed much earlier in Europe but as they sprung up so fast and historical records from this era are not very detailed it is hard to pinpoint the first castle.
The stone castle and keep origionated in France but the motte and bailey had been in use much earlier and iron age hill forts are even seen as precursors to that.
Castles were built out of stones or bricks.

Built castles
Castles were first built in 1066, this was mainly due to the battle of hastings
King William I (William the conqueror) first introduced castles into Britain in the form of Motte and Bailey castles after he first took over the Country in 1066. King William I needed some castles that could be built quickly and cheaply after in the war in order to stop rebellions. Motte and Bailey castles were ideal as they were made out of wood which were both cheap and quick to build.
They built churches and castles and stuff like that
built as protection for invaders
William the Conqueror built the first wooden ones but kings after him also built their own castles.

motte and bailey castles were the first castles built by william and later stone castles came around they were first rectangular but then were made circular which was better defence. e.t.c. ;-)

Motte and Bailey castles were built in the 11th century just after King William I (Willilam the conqueror) first took over Britain in 1066. Motte and Bailey castles were made out of wood. They were mainley built because they were cheap and light so they were easy to build. They were later replaced by Stone keep castles (Stone castles) because Stone castles were stronger, wouldn't rot within a few years, wouldn't burn etc...
