Basically, the Aztec culture had no prior contact with or knowledge of Europeans, and so they did not know what to make of them. Since they did not know what guns were or how they worked, Cortes' primitive guns appeared to be magical devices. Cortes and his crew seemed to be supernatural beings, and it was felt to be best to comply with their wishes. Of course, the Aztecs paid a very high price for that decision.

Because Cortes had the element of surprise, guns(Which to the Aztecs were extremely scary), armor, and he and his men were more skilled in warfare then the Aztecs. Besides that he was up against basically civilians when he killed Montezuma during battle. This caused great confusion in the empire and the people were scared, making them easy to conquer as many of them fled.

Hernan Cortes was a Spaniard thirsty for gold. When he heard the Aztecs were a gold mine for gold, he went straight there to get it. First, he made allies to help him defeat the Aztecs, like La Malinche and the Tlaxcalans. When he got to Tenochtitlan, he acted friendly until he turned and took the emperor, Moctezuma II, prisoner. He ended up taking over the city-state, in the name of New Spain.

First and foremost by disease. Smallpox killed nearly 90% of the native population. He also utilized neighboring tribes, who were their enemies. About 100,000+ of them.
