Some people think it saved many American lives because they didn't have to invade the actual island of Japan. It is estimated that around 1 million U.S. soldiers would have died in the invasion. More than that including all the casualties.
Also it stopped the USSR from demanding joint occupation of Japan and showed our superiority to them.
The Manhattan Project cost the government around $2 billion so it would be a waste not to use the product.
Lastly, the Japanese treated the U.S. POWs very cruely. Using the atomic bomb may have been a way of revenge for many people.
the main reason is it saved millions of lives. Before the US even imagined using the bomb Japan declared that every citizen on the island nation would fight to the death. This would cause many hundreds of thousands of American and alllied deaths. Also the blow to the Japanese people would be larger. Insted of two cities the whole island would have been in shambles. Although i do belive that we should have warned the Japanese ahead of time so they could evacuate as many people as possible.
My uncle told me that he once encountered an Australian who asked him if he was an American. When my uncle replied that he was, the Australian said, "God bless Harry Truman." This Australian had been a POW of Imperial Japan, like many thousands of British, Australians, Americans, Dutch, French, and others, and he could not have lasted much longer. After the bomb dropped, they began receiving the food and medical supplies long overdue to them. Also, one million US casualties had been projected in an invasion, not counting the Japanese casualties, and the Russians who would have died invading Japan. Several options were discussed, including a demonstration of the atomic bomb to the Japanese government, but it was decided that the Japanese would simply move Allied prisoners into likely target cities and use them as a shield. This contributor agrees with the above answer. Inhumane as it seems, the bombing kept the war from dragging into 1946, and it saved many more than it killed.
American leaders thought it would result in far lesser casualties than a drawn out war. Given the Japanese tradition of death before dishonor, in this case dishonor being surrender. As for Hiroshima, it was picked as a target because it contained many military factories and was less populated than other cities like Tokyo.
WW2 was bringing many casualties to the United States. President Truman stated that this weapon would bring the war to an end. That was enough to put the bomb to use. The people that opposed the use of the bomb could be counted with the finger. All other were wanting revenge.
They didn't have to. They were at war.
