The more holes in the tile the better the acoustic properties of the tile.

If the tile has lots of holes it will absorb sound better and prevent reverberation within the room.

if the tile is smooth it will not absorb the sound and it will bounce back and cause an echo.

Many different reasons, heres a few to help you out:

*Poor Quality Drywall Mud

*Paint Cracking

*Just Old age

The main reason and most common reason is from rain from the roof. Generally these cracks happen in corners.

But another reason if the crack is in the middle of the ceiling its most likely because of a support beam and the people who installed the wall made the screws too tight or somehow made it really tight in the middle and not tight on the ends, causing it to crack generally down the middle.

Hope this helped you out. -Aj
