Black out screens were used because the German and Japanese might be trying to bomb us, so the curtains were used to prevent them from finding targets and being able to use large metropolitan areas as navigational aids.

To prevent the enemy (night) bomber planes from seeing where they were and where to aim.
So the airplanes that carried bombs couldn't see them from the air. If the lights were on the bombers could target cities, factories, hospitals, and military targets.

Everybody in the UK had to use blackout curtains during World War II. It was a criminal offence if light could be seen coming from a house window after dark as this could indicate to an enemy bomber, the location of civilian populations.

so people can not see them . All sources of light had to be turned off at night, no shop lights, street lights, traffic lights. Buses cars and trucks had tiny lights with cowls on them. In residential housing, essential lighting was allowed but blackouts must be hung at every window.

The reason for all this preparation ? Almost every night the German bombers came to target factories, railways, aero-dromes etc. We had to show them nothing but blackness from below to make their job harder. I was a little boy in Birmingham at the time. Birmingham was a major industrial target. It was an interesting time for a boy growing up.

They had to use blackout curtains because if there were German planes flying above and saw a tiny shine of light they would know where to bomb their bombs.
