Joseph Smith had made a city plan for the city of Zion, which was never built. This plan was a grid pattern with religious and cultural centers at the center of each neighborhood, and allowing each family to have a large backyard in order to raise their own food. When the Mormon pioneers moved to Salt Lake City, they adapted this plan a little (such as making the streets incredibly wide), and then implemented it. Many other pioneer cities in the west follow a similar grid pattern. It is easy to find your way around and give directions, so the grid pattern continues to be followed today.

Where when and how the first LDS pioneer settlers established themselves in Utah?

The first Mormon pioneers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in July 1947. They quickly organized themselves and began planting and preparing to welcome the others and have food and shelter for the winter ahead. From Salt Lake City, small groups of settlers were sent to establish other communities throughout the west. Most of these communities were assigned a specific purpose, whether it was growing a certain crop, logging, mining, or ranching, and then shared what they produced in order to ensure their survival.
