The chemical Agent Orange was sprayed from airplanes to spread it across the forests of South Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. Over 20 million gallons was sprayed in over 6,000 missions under Operation Ranch Hand.
All the herbicides used in Operation Ranch Hand had a color name. The manufacturers shipped them in 55-gallon steel drums with a colored stripe painted on them to make it easy to pick the one you needed for the mission at hand, and this particular herbicide had an orange stripe. Hence, Agent Orange.
As to why they picked the color orange for this product...they had to use a color and they picked one at random. They could have as easily picked any other color.
Agent Orange, also called napalm, was a chemical defoliant sprayed on the crops and vegetation by the U.S. military to eliminate forest cover for the Viet Cong and to destroy the crops that fed them. Agent Orange caused many health issues for returning U.S. military, as well as the Vietnamese population.
It is dropped by aircraft and spread with winds.
