He did not meet any of the requirements:
Rambam, Mishna Torah, Laws of Kings 11:4 - "If a king will arise from the House of David, diligent in Torah study and the fulfillment of mitzvahs - of the written and Oral Law -- like David his ancestor, and will compel all the Jews to go in its [the Torah's] path . . and builds the Holy Temple and gathers the Diaspora [to the land of Israel], this is certainly the Messiah." He did none of this.
The reason why they could'nt recognine Jesus is because it was after the transformation. Which The Bible clearly state, "old things are gone and is now, taken on the form of the spirit".

Many people did recognize Jesus as the Messiah, but the majority of Israelites who didn't at the time was because they were expecting the Messiah to literally fulfil prophecy and Jesus didn't. He didn't literally sit on the throne of David or carry a sword, etc. It is much like today's Christians expect Christ's return to be literal fulfilment of John of Patmos' Book of Revelation.

Because they were. They were so wrapped up in their traditions that they completely missed Jesus as the Messiah. Not only did they not recognize Him for what He was, but because of pride they felt threatened by Him and His teachings. This is why they had Jesus crucified.
