Female genital mutilation is a practice that predates the Muslim religion as well as Christianity so it is not a religious practice . in Muslim territory scholars have claimed the Mohammad approved of the practice. Female genital mutilation was carried out mainly in North Africa where it is believed to have originated from where it spread to the Middle East. the original reasoning behind it was to guarantee the virginity of the female concerned by first of all making sex an unpleasant experience and secondly making sex impossible by literally sowing the opening to the vagina shut leaving just enough room for menstruation and urination. genital mutilations were regularly done to christian women in christian European communities until the late 1800s.

Today these practices live on as they have become the cultural norm and in many community where women have not been genitally mutilated they are not fit to be married and become members of their community.

Female genital mutilation is not a Muslim tradition per se, but an African tradition. There are numerous African Animist and Christian tribes, and even one Jewish Tribe, that perform this insidious practice. However, a number of African Muslims are unaware that Islam has no requirement or sanctioning of female circumcision and instead believe that this cultural activity is sanctioned by the religion they hold dear.

As for why Africans have historically engaged in FGM, the practice is an ethnic marker, rooted in gender inequality, ideas about purity, modesty and aesthetics, and attempts to control women's sexuality. It is supported by both women and men in countries that practice it, particularly by the women, who see it as a source of honor and authority, and an essential part of raising a daughter well.
