Gerbils use squeaks that sound like 'bird tweets' as a sign of communication between other gerbils. If you have more than one gerbil, you would hear them squeaking at eachother. Its really cute though :)

If there a more than 1 in a tank they are talking. If you are holding them they are either,Mad,Scared,Trying to talk to you. So it is nothing bad!
my gerbil is called snuffles and she is very clever she is very quiet but if you hold her next to your ear then you can hear her doing very quiet squeaks. if i grab her a bit too hard then she does a louder squeak and you will easily hear her. i hope your gerbils are as clever as my little snuffles. i have trained her tricks:)
