Best Answer

A particular moth (Cydia deshaisiana) lays its eggs in the seed-pods of two species of Sebastiania, a shrub native to northern Mexico. Once hatched, the larvae eat the seeds from the inside out until they are able to leave.

Mexican jumping beans are the seeds of the Sebastianiawith larvae inside. The larvae become active as the seeds are warmed.

The larva of a moth or butterfly is in it. Its movement causes the "jumping." See the Related Link.
