They hopefully only use it for the approved uses on the label: for cough and cold symptoms. To use any over the counter medicine for uses or in ways not described on the label directions is a very dangerous practice and can cause serious health problems and sometimes even death. Talk to a Pharmacist when you purchase medications like Nyquil to be sure that it will be safe and effective for your needs. They can direct you to a more safe or more effective medicine for your symptoms if Nyquil, or whatever medicine you are purchasing, is not the best choice for that.
There is some alcohol in Nyquil, and some alcoholics have been known to desperately drink cough medicines for the little bit of alcohol they contain. And, sadly, some have died from getting too much of the other ingredients in the medicine at the same time which can cause organ damage or other overdose complications.
Always follow the label directions and do not listen to anyone other than a Doctor Who gives advice that is different from those directions.
