If the the temp gauge is swinging around oddly the sending unit might be bad. Otherwise i would replace the thermostat cheap part, sometimes a pain to change but definitely worth the effort. YOu can check the sending unit w/ a volt meter and just change the thermostat for good measure. Both should be located in a haynes/chiltons manual.
