Why does a 1996 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0L start when you cross the posts on its solenoid but not when you turn the key in the ignition?

the solenoid itself is probably bad, if not that probably the ignition switch I agree 100%, check the solenoid first then the switch.

Buy a push button from an auto or tractor parts store, mount it in the desired location, and route two 12 guage wires from the button to the starter. Connect one wire to the large, center post on the solenoid and touch the other wire to either of the other two posts on the solenoid while pushing on the starter button. When the engine starts cranking, you'll know which post to connect the other wire to. Connect the wire to the correct solenoid post, and then check the wire routing to avoid major heat sources that might damage the wires.

The problem can be that the battery terminals are not tight enough or that the battery cables are worn out. A starter needs really tight contact to the battery in order to supply enough current to the solenoid and starter -- merely touching the terminals won't be enough.

To shut the ignition hotwire off, simply disconnect at the battery. Thats the simple and easy way. Of course, if you're gonna really fix the thing, you'll need to get into the main ignition switch, etc, etc,...understand? Hot-wireing is just a short term thing! Also, make sure you have the proper AUTHORITY to do all of this!
