My daughter's 89 Mazda 626 was doing the same thing. I checked the yahoogroups Mazda forum and they said to open the air box and remove the filter. Inside the Mass Air Flow body, you'll see a nipple protruding into the chamber. This is the probe for the sensor. They suggested spraying it with electric parts cleaner or a non-chlorinated brake cleaner until it's clean, letting it evaporate for 15-20 minutes, and then button everything back up and start.
'Course, when we followed this advice, the car wouldn't start at all! I took a chance on buying a Mass Air Flow sensor from a salvage yard for $25 instead of a rebuilt from a parts store for $180 w/ $35 core charge.
Replaced it and it started right up. No problems since.
