This problem is very common on the WJ grand Cherokees on mine i spent about an hour farting around "fault finding" (evey where you tested with a meter was fine). Put it back together and it wouldn't work. What I found it to be was an earth fault in the TAILLIGHT ASSEMBLY. I think this is caused by too much heat distorting the base where the lamp holder twists in. I used the soldering iron (Soldering Bolt)and put a dab of solder on the little brass terminals to build up the height a bit (i have since read you can prise them up a little with a small screwdriver) Just remember if using the pry method don't be heavy handed. This fixed the problem on mine and has been good ever since. What i have also done since is replace the bulbs with RED LED cluster bulbs which i purchased on eBay (they are supposed to last for about a Zillion hours but run much cooler because they draw next to no power. The ones i purchased were 36 led 3157 wedge type to suit a 2000 WJ. You can't see any difference when operating.
Replace bulb with correct type and check contacts inside of the socket and clean if needed.
check your parking light grounds, lights are trying to ground back thru the circut .common to lose ground in the light socket or even a shorted bulb. most part stores have replacement sockets
Remove brake light interior trim panels. Then you push and twist the socket for the brake light that needs replacing. Then pull out socket. then pull out bulb from socket and place new bulb in the light socket. Once bulb is installed into light socket. Place the socket where you removed it from brake light housing. Push and twist clockwise to lock back in place. Then replace trim panels.
14 or 17 mm socket.
Cut the wires then splice on new socket
You probably have a loose wire connection in the brake light sockets. Insert a nail or probe tip into the back of the light socket where the wires are inserted and test the brake lights. (The socket can appear perfectly normal and the wires may even seem well attached.)
This will happen if the ground terminal for the brakelight bulb is connected to the power side by accident. If you have a 3 wire socket or light assembly with GROUND, TAIL, and BRAKE wires two of them are wired incorrectly. When the headlights are off the brake light is finding ground thru the filaments of the headlights. Since the headlights have much heavier filaments, they provide a good ground for weaker brake light. When power is on the headlights the brake light will have power on both sides, so no current flows and it goes out.
expose back of bulb, turn to the left, replace bulb, return to socket, turn to the right
You have to remove the cover for the third lite by poping the cover off using a small screw driver. Be carfull not to crack it because the plastic cover should be a little britle. At this point you will see the socket mounted inside the lens housing. Turn the socket clockwise for about a quarter of a turn and the light will come out with the socket. Replace the bulb, seat the socket, replace the cover and your done.
Replace bulb Check socket for corrosion Check socket for Power and ground
replace the headlight switch its wore out replace the headlight switch its wore out
Just unscrew the rear brake light, turn out the socket, and replace the bulb.
