if it has stopped purring and meowing then you should go to the vet because it is probably DEAD
actually you are wrong about it being dead. Because my cat who is about a year old has not purred or meowed in about 6-7 months. My oldest nephew ran through a door thge cat was on thge other side and it smacked her in the face hard enough to where she was bleeding really bad. Made a few vet trips and she is fine today, the only thing is she is now more skittish, shows mild aggression towards children so we keep my 3 yr. old away from her and her isolated from children but she plays with the other cat here and after almost a year is becoming a little bit more sociable. Just because a cat is not meowing or purring does not mean it is dead. I think my cayt stopped purring because of her tramatic incident, anything is possible. If it is a big concern Iwould suggest looking at what the cat has been through, and/or talking to your veterinarian. She might be able to help.
Because it has nothing to say. Do you talk when you have absolutely nothing to say?
Your cat might just be lonely, it misses something or just isn't happy.
um..... nothing i dont think?!

This varies from cat to cat. I have had cats that don't purr at all and some that purr quite loudly. I would not be surprised if my current kitten purred at least 20 dB.
No. a cat's purr is an involuntary action, their bodies natrually do it without any effort. its basically like breathing, we don't have to think about it to do it. often purr when they're being stroked or played with. Humans can make a purring sound with our tongues or some can breathe in and make a purring sound with our throats but it isn't the same as a cat's purr.
Cats purr usually when they are happy and content, but cats do use purring also to calm others, a dying cat may purr just to calm itself too. A cat may purr while eating if he really likes the food, so his favourite food will propably be the one to cause purring to occur. Do note, that not all cats purr when they eat. It is quite an achievement to do two things at once with your throat.
It isn't very relaxed
There is no illness that causes a cat to purr. Cats purr when they are happy, content, and socialized. This includes non domesticated cats.

cats purr because they are happy and like their situation, and being comfortable is a happy situation, so the cat will purr.
From what I understand from the discovery channel, the largest cat that has the ability to purr is the Puma or Mountain Lion.
A contented cat is likely to purr, especially if stroked.
