Alternating current is much more efficient to transmit than direct current. Using Transformers, it can be stepped up to high voltages for transmission over long distances using relatively small conductors, and then stepped down at the destination to provide high current.

AC generators (alternators) have replaced DC generators (dynamos) in cars because they are more reliable and last longer. That is because a DC machine needs a commutator to take the current to the armature, and this requires relatively frequent replacement of the carbon brushes.

An alternator does not need a commutator, it uses smooth slip-rings, which cause much less wear on the carbon brushes so that they last longer. In this way AC is easier to generate even though the car needs a rectifier to turn it into DC.

Machinery driven with any strength, usually involves rotating something. Rotating a magetic field within windings, satisfies the conditions needed to induce electric current. The rotation also causes the current to change direction with every pass, which is AC.
To 'undo' this changing field and make it DC, requires switch gear in the form of a commutator, to keep the current one way only. This is expensive and puts limitations on the power generated.

DC current, however, is very easy to make, when using methods other than heavy machinery.
Chemical energy from batteries.
Photovoltaic, from solar panels.

Is electricity generated by rotating magnets around copper coils AC or DC?

It is AC, alternating current. To create DC the generated power needs to go through a full wave rectifier.

In a power station where dc is actually converted to ac while distribution?

The generated voltage in a power station is AC voltage, not DC. So, it is never converted to AC, because it is already AC.

What are the roles of a diode and a capacitor in an AC-DC converter?

An AC-DC converter you can operate a device on AC instead of batteries. ~bobbyjack~ : D

What are the reasons for generating energy as alternating current?

ENERGY CAN BE GENERATED ONLY AS A ALTERNATIG CURRENT.THERE IS NO WAYS OF GENERATING ENERGY AS A DC DIRECTY.IN CASE OF DC GENERATION ,AC IS GENERATED FIRST AND THEN RECTIFIED INTO DC. TO UNDERSTAND THIS CLEARLY YOU NEED TO KNOW THE WORKING OF GENERATORS. THE REASONS FOR GENERATING ENERGY AS AC IS ENERGY CANNOT BE GENERATED AS DC.

Why not you use ac instead of dc to electronic components?

AC is easier and cheaper to send from the generators to the consumers than DC is.

How is AC current generated?

AC voltage, making AC current available, may be generated in several ways: * AC generator driven by * Steam turbine * Diesel motor * Petrol motor * Water turbine * Inverter from a DC source

Can solar energy be used to power AC electric motor?

Yes, but the DC current generated needs to be turned into AC first.

Where would DC be used instead of AC?

DC is used for extra-high voltage transmission systems, as there are less losses with DC than with AC, and no synchronising problems.

Why should you not use dc motor in fans?

yes. we can use...but normally generated power is Ac. so availability of dc is require a converter..

Can you use AC instead of DC for superposition theorem?

Yes, the theorem still applies for AC.
