Because Scandinavia is so far north that in summer the days are very long and the nights are very short. Whilst it may not be possible to actually see the sun at midnight it will still be quite light in the very late evening. Conversely, in winter, the nights are very long and the days very short. It is then the "Land of the Midday Gloom"
Scandinavia is known as the "land of the midnight sun" because during the summer months, the sun remains visible for 24 hours a day, due to its high latitude. This phenomenon occurs because of the tilt of the Earth's axis and its location in the Arctic Circle.
Every place that's less than about 1,620 miles from either the north pole or the south
pole has one occasion during the year when the sun stays up for more than 24 hours.
The closer you are to one of the poles, the longer that period is, and if you're exactly
AT either the north pole or the south pole, the sun stays up for 6 months.
In the northern hemisphere, that area includes a little more than half of Greenland,
a little less than half of Alaska, and large parts of Canada, Russia, Norway, Sweden,
and Finland.
All of that area is the 'Land of the Midnight Sun', because there's at least one
midnight during the year when the sun is up, and the closer to the pole you are,
the more consecutive midnights there are when the sun is up.
I'm no astronomer, but i think it's because the sun shines almost 24/7 in that circle:: Also, Winter is a dark time in Norway, meaning the sun doesn't set until midnight.
The Scandinavian countries (Norway, Sweden and Finland) are each called The Land of the Midnight Sun. Technically the territory above the Arctic Circle and below the Antarctic Circle are the lands of the midnight sun but they aren't countries.
Japan is known as the "Land of the Rising Sun," not the setting sun. This nickname reflects Japan's location to the east of China, where the sun rises.
Norway is called "the land of the midnight sun" because it experiences continuous daylight for about two months during the summer season in regions north of the Arctic Circle. This natural phenomenon occurs because Norway is located at high latitudes where the sun does not set below the horizon for a certain period in summer.
The land of the rising sun, which is a nickname for Japan, is located in Asia.
Japan is often referred to as the "Land of the Rising Sun" due to its historical association with the rising sun symbol and its location in the east.
