Diesel engines, unlike gas engines do not have any spark plugs. The reason that they do not need a spark plug is because in diesel engines, the air is compressed much, much more than in a gas engine. The more that you compress the air, the more that the air is heated. Diesel engines have so much compression that the air inside of your cylinder becomes super heated and there is no need for a spark plug. The air is so hot that when the diesel fuel is injected into the cylinder, the diesel fuel ignites and the piston is pushed down via the "explosion" that takes place when the piston reaches tdc(top dead center).
Because of this, diesel engines need to warm up. This is why diesel engines have glow plugs. The glow plugs warm the block and help the engine to heat up faster.
Moisture in the exhaust, or a cold running engine.
yupps
i have a 3406b inframed new head injectors runs rough and pours white smoke had pump and timeing advance off timeing advance rebuilt put back on. now its worse
Seeing as it is a diesel engine it has to warm up first in the colder weather. You say that you are starting the engine early in the morning? Well the black smoke may be caused by he motor being cold or simply by the fact that it is a big diesel engine. The rough ride you are referring to is caused by the motor being under-heated, and then as the engine heats up it smooths out.
Most diesel engines are hard to start when it is cold. Plugging the diesel engine block heater in will help the engine start.
check your ignition timing.
No, never put diesel in a gasoline engine it will foul up the sparkplugs in your engine, clog it up, and make it smoke alot. Cold Diesel in a diesel engine isn't too good either because when diesel gets cold it gels up, that is why most diesel engines have a built in heater to warm up the engine and fuel before starting. Hope this helps
How cold is it. Most diesel engine do not responed properly when the engine and fuel is cold.
This depends on the temperature outside and if your starting it cold. If you start it cold even in 60 degree weather it may idle rough for the first few minutes. You can solve this by letting the Wait to Start light to go out and then pressing the Throttle down slightly and letting off. This engages the high idle which should stop your vehicle from running rough for so long, as it lets the engine warm up faster.
It can and probably will
when it get really humid or very cold
A "glow plug" preheats the cylinder. Diesel engines do not have spark plugs (Diesel's goal was to make an internal combustion engine that could run on anything; he specifically had in mind a kind of slurry made from coal), instead using the heat of compression to ignite the fuel. This usually works fine when the engine is actually running, but it can be difficult to cold start a Diesel engine since the cylinder and block absorb some/most of the compression heat (it's not a problem once the engine's been running, because by then they're already hot). The glow plug exists to preheat the ignition chamber and/or the fuel, making it easier to start the engine from a cold state.
